Where Eaglets Dare
Their futures elude the eyes of parents who dream to make
their children’s dreams come true:
Ballerinas, quarterbacks, doctors
and presidents. Maybe
Hollywood honchos drenched
in Armani, Polo or Prada,
the portals to their cool worlds
sealed off by Foster Grants.
Teachers pray they’ll write
perfect fours and grade A themes.
Parents fly them to Disneyworld
where all children get their wishes granted:
A set of Mickey Mouse ears before
buzzing around like bees
without a brand,
zipping toward tomorrow land.
Beneath big ears
eaglets are hidden
by dream colored T-shirts and summer shorts,
skinny legs and funny faces.
Feed them, clothe them
leave them alone then.
Dare yourself to love them enough
that they might crawl to
the edge of the world
where they can dream unbound
among mile high mountains,
and learn to grasp the rocky crags
with their own hands
until they choose to dive
like thunderbolts from the sky
and fly like the eagles they are.
